The 5 Roles That Changed in Our Brief

Here is what I removed, what I added, and why.

1. Perception engineer — downgraded. This is the role everyone writes into an autonomy job description first, and it is the one a city operating vendor stacks needs least. Perception is shipped by Apollo Go, WeRide and Pony.ai. A local operator does not retrain someone else's object detector. Unless you are a technology partner yourself, hiring perception researchers in Dubai is hiring for a job that does not exist in your organisation.

2. Simulation and scenario engineer — promoted to first priority. Four million kilometres of road data is only useful if you can replay it, mutate it and generate the edge cases the road did not hand you. Dubai-specific scenarios — unmarked lane merges in construction zones, extreme summer thermal effects on sensors, dense pedestrian behaviour around malls at closing time — must be authored locally because no vendor's default library contains them.

3. Data platform engineer — promoted. A modest autonomous fleet generates multiple terabytes per vehicle per day. Ingestion, retention tiering, indexing by scenario, and cost control are the daily work. This is the single largest headcount line in every deploying autonomy programme I have seen, and it is filled by people who have never worked on a vehicle in their lives.

4. Fleet operations and remote assistance tooling — added. Forty-eight active vehicles need dispatch, health monitoring, intervention workflows and an operator console that a non-engineer can use at three in the morning. This is ordinary high-quality product engineering, and it is chronically under-hired because it does not sound glamorous in a press release.

5. Safety case and assurance engineer — added, hardest to fill. Someone has to convert kilometres into a defensible argument that a regulator accepts. This blends systems engineering, statistics and regulatory writing. In the UAE market this profile is close to non-existent locally and almost always relocated.

Why This Affects Employers With No Interest in Autonomy

Here is the part that matters if you run an ordinary Dubai technology team and have no intention of touching a vehicle.

Autonomy programmes do not compete with you for product engineers. It shows up as time-to-fill drifting from nine weeks to fourteen. By the time you notice it in your salary benchmark, you have already lost a quarter.

If you are not, do nothing differently except one thing: re-baseline your time-to-fill assumption for senior backend and data roles upward by three to five weeks, and start requisitions earlier accordingly. That single adjustment costs nothing and protects your roadmap.

In both cases, do not write “autonomous vehicle experience” into a job description unless you genuinely need it. It will halve your candidate pool and add a premium for a skill your actual work does not use. The engineers who succeed on the operator side come from streaming data, distributed systems and platform backgrounds.
